NEW DELHI: Chennai witnessed a heated political showdown when the street lights outside the airport mysteriously went off just as Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived on Saturday evening. Power outages were reported in various parts of the city, triggering outrage from BJP workers who demanded a thorough investigation, citing a potential security lapse.
In response, DMK dismissed the allegations, claiming that the power cut was not intentional. He accused the BJP of politicizing the issue.
The power disruption, reportedly, occurred due to a disconnection of a high-tension (230KV) supply line from the grid. The outage affected not only the airport area but also Porur, St Thomas Mount, Poonamallee, and nearby regions, stated officials from the electricity department.
Meanwhile, BJP cadres took to the streets, vehemently protesting against the DMK government and Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Energy Department, Senthil Balaji. They raised slogans demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.

Amit Shah’s visit to Chennai is part of his two-day tour to Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. He landed in Chennai at 9:20 PM on Saturday and is scheduled to address a public meeting in Pallikonda near Vellore on Sunday afternoon before heading to Andhra Pradesh. The incident has added fuel to the ongoing political battle between the ruling DMK and the BJP, setting the stage for intense exchanges in the days to come.
