New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, followed by a powerful 6.8 aftershock. The tremors caused widespread destruction, with reports indicating at least 144 fatalities and over 700 injured. Buildings have collapsed in both countries, including a high-rise under construction in Bangkok.
Taking to X, PM Modi assured all possible assistance to the disaster-hit nations. “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he wrote.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments. Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar stated, “We are analyzing reports related to damage primarily in Myanmar. We are in touch with authorities in the country. We have always been a first responder in terms of assistance.” He also emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in disaster management, highlighting India’s commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercises.

The Indian Embassy in Thailand has issued an emergency helpline (+66 618819218) for Indian citizens and confirmed that all embassy members in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are safe. The embassy is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with Thai authorities.

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar, with tremors felt as far as northern Thailand, where metro and rail services were temporarily suspended. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared an emergency in Bangkok and is holding urgent meetings to assess the crisis.
