NEW DELHI: S. Phangnon Konyak, a member of the Rajya Sabha, has been selected to represent India at the upcoming Global Parliamentary Dialogue on Interfaith Cooperation, scheduled to take place in Rome, Italy, from June 19 to 21.

An official notice released by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat confirmed her participation, stating that the Chairman of the Upper House has formally appointed her to be part of the international gathering focused on interreligious dialogue and mutual understanding.

The event, titled the Second Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, is being coordinated by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in partnership with the Italian legislature and with backing from Religions for Peace. The summit will assemble lawmakers, spiritual leaders, representatives of global institutions including the United Nations, civil society groups, and international development actors to engage in cross-cultural dialogue.

Taking to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Konyak conveyed her appreciation to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.

“Eagerly anticipating this international engagement, which serves as a vital platform for nurturing inclusivity, understanding, and unity across diverse cultures and beliefs,” she wrote.

Konyak is expected to leave for the Italian capital on June 18 and return to India on June 22.

This year’s edition of the conference is anchored on the theme “Strengthening Trust and Embracing Hope for Our Common Future.” The aim is to enhance collaborative efforts among global faith traditions to respond collectively to humanitarian crises, societal divides, and environmental challenges.

The gathering will build on previous frameworks such as the Marrakesh Communiqué and other significant declarations adopted by the IPU—focusing on advancing global peace, equality, and safeguarding human dignity.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, based in Geneva and established in 1889, represents a global assembly of 181 national parliaments and 15 partner bodies. The organization works toward empowering parliamentary systems through cooperation, peace-building initiatives, and promotion of democratic values worldwide.
