AIZAWL: Dr. K. Beichhua, the minister for animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, today announced compensation for pig farmers whose animals were killed in 2021 to stop the spread of African swine fever.

Dr. Beichhua stated during a speech at an event hosted at the Vety Polyclinic Hospital Conference Hall in Khatla that almost 2488 families in Mizoram killed their pigs in 2021.

The entire sanctioned amount is Rs 10.48 crores, will be deposited into their account via Direct Benefit Transfer.
Since many imported pigs have been found to have illnesses that may easily spread to the local pig farms, attempts have been taken to prevent the import of pigs from outside the state. Pork is the most popular meat consumed in Mizoram, as stated by Dr. Beichhua.

The Minister further added that the State and concerned department want to provide compensations to all families affected by ASF; but as the rules laid down by Central Ministry allow compensation only to those who had culled their pigs under the supervision of the AH&Vety department, all families could not be covered.

Pigs must be killed according to the National Action Plan in all impacted locations. The following compensation is given for each pig that is put down: Under 15 kg: Rs. 2200; between 15 and 40 kg: Rs. 5800; between 40 and 70 kg: Rs. 8400; and between 70 and 100 kg: Rs. 12,000. More than 100 kg will be compensated with Rs. 15,000.

Pig feedstocks must also be destroyed with a 22/kg compensation payment.

On March 21, 2021, African Swine Fever (ASF) was discovered and verified in the community of Lungsen.
Since March 2021, African Swine Fever has claimed the lives of almost 42,200 pigs, leading to 7653 animal culls this year alone. African swine fever has afflicted 127 communities and villages in the state’s 10 districts as of right now.
