NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted, allegedly by two hawkers, at New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday evening.

Police said both the accused were arrested. The victim had to board a train for Gujarat.

According to police, the victim had gone to Chandigarh, along with her family, for some rituals and lived there from July 18–25. There she met one Deepak alias Bhagwana of Gondau, UP. He also went to Gujarat with them and lived with them.

“On August 4, she left home along with Deepak to go to his village and boarded a train the next morning. On August 6, they reached Lucknow, from where they hired a taxi and reached the village of Deepak,” said a police officer.

They returned the same night and boarded a train for New Delhi, from where they were supposed to catch a train for Gujarat.

On August 7, both reached the New Delhi railway station at 2 pm. They were due to board the Jamnagar Express at 9.40 pm, which they missed.

While they were both sitting at the railway station, an argument broke out between the two, and Deepak left her at the station.

After some time, she started searching for him on the station premises. While crossing the central foot over bridge, she was approached by two hawkers (water bottle sellers), Hardeep Singh (21) and Rahul Kumar (20). When she requested them to make a call to her home, they let her talk to her brother on their mobile phone. The brother requested the hawkers to help her catch a train.

They told her that the train would be available from some other station.

They took her to some bushes along the track near Tilak Bridge, where they sexually assaulted her. On her request, they brought her back to Ajmeri Gate in the wee hours.

In the meantime, Deepak also met them. Hardeep and Rahul scolded Deepak for abandoning her. An argument followed between them. The patrolling staff spotted this and enquired about the matter and subsequently brought all of them to New Delhi Railway Station.

The complainant and both the accused have been medically examined. A forensic team has visited the scene of the crime. An investigation into the matter is underway.
