New Delhi: Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, wanted in the โ‚น13,850 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, has been arrested in Belgium, CBI sources confirmed. The 65-year-old was detained on an open-ended arrest warrant issued by a Mumbai court.

Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modiโ€”currently fighting extradition in the UKโ€”are accused of defrauding PNB using fake banking guarantees. They fled India in early 2018 before the fraud was uncovered.

Reports suggest Choksi may seek bail, citing health issues. He has been living in Antwerp with his Belgian wife after obtaining residency.

This marks a key development in Indiaโ€™s efforts to bring back economic offenders. The government has already seized assets worth โ‚น22,280 crore linked to the case.
