MEA moves embassy due to worsening situation in Myanmar

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday that Indian Embassy staff have been relocated from Sittwe to Yangon due to the “precarious and deteriorating” situation in Myanmar. This decision comes amidst escalating conflict within the nation, prompting the Indian government to take precautionary measures. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the MEA, confirmed the relocation and stated that the Indian Consulate in Mandalay remains operational to provide continued diplomatic assistance.

“We are closely monitoring the security situation in Myanmar, particularly in Rakhine state,” the MEA emphasized, highlighting the importance of vigilance in light of ongoing challenges. The move to relocate embassy staff underscores India’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens in the region.

Furthermore, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated the importance of observing proper safety protocols for Indians traveling to Myanmar. Despite the challenging circumstances, the embassy stands ready to assist and support Indian nationals as needed.

The decision to relocate embassy staff follows months of unrest and conflict in Myanmar, where the military has faced resistance in various regions. The nationwide conflict erupted following the military coup in February 2021, leading to widespread protests and political upheaval.
