KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, visited SSKM Hospital on Wednesday evening to meet the victims of the Nandigram and Khejuri panchayat polls.

Around 4:00 PM, Banerjee arrived at SSKM’s trauma care building to meet nine party workers who had been injured during the panchayat elections or in post-poll violence.

During her visit, CM Banerjee provided financial assistance to the victims. She handed over a cheque of ₹50,000 to each injured individual and ₹2 lakhs to the families of the deceased. Additionally, along with the cheques, Banerjee also distributed health drinks and sweets to the injured victims.

While there were injured individuals in the burn ward at SSKM Hospital, Banerjee was unable to visit them due to concerns about infection transmission. However, she made an announcement during her visit, stating that a compensation of ₹2 lakhs would be provided to the families of the deceased, along with a job for one family member.

Accompanying Banerjee during her visit were the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Firad Hakim, the West Bengal Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, along with other officials.

According to sources from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), there are over 40 injured TMC workers who are currently admitted to various hospitals for treatment.

“I came to SSKM Hospital to meet the victims of those who have faced the brunt of the attack from BJP goons in Nandigram and Khejuri. The violence that has been perpetrated by the BJP across the State is condemnable,” CM Banerjee said following her visit.

“BJP couldn’t defeat us electorally and has, therefore, resorted to violence and thrashed our party workers. Some of them are badly burned. Our state ministers are in touch with the victim’s families and we will provide them with all aid necessary,” she stated.

Emphasising the unity among opposition parties, CM Banerjee mentioned the newly formed alliance named I.N.D.I.A. (Indian National Democratic Alliance). “BJP’s sole focus is to create unrest, violence, and divide society. They have no other job, apart from indulging in destructive politics, However, I.N.D.I.A is ready for the battle and the BJP will get a decisive reply,” she said.

Meanwhile, in response to the alleged violence, killings and ballot tampering, the BJP West Bengal unit organised a protest march called ‘Maha Michil’ from College Square to Dharmatala. Senior state leaders Dilip Ghosh, Sukanta Majumder, and Suvendu Adhikari participated in the march.

Sukanta Majumder, the BJP Bengal president, accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress of being passive opposition parties. He alleged that these parties had abandoned their own workers and claimed that vote looting had taken place during the panchayat polls in West Bengal.

“These parties (CPI (M) and Congress) have abandoned their own workers. The BJP has and will always fight to look into the eyes,” Majumdar said.

Majumder also stated that the Lok Sabha elections would be conducted using electronic voting machines (EVMs) and not the ballot system.
