KOLKATA: Following claims of Lokpal directing the Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct inquiry into the cash for query scandal, Trinamool Congress finally breaks their silence on Mahua Moitra’s future.

Upon leaving the CGO complex after submitting 6,000 pages of documents in relation with an Enforcement Directorate registered cash-for-jobs scam, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said that Moitra is capable enough to handle her battles on her own.

The Diamond Harbour member of parliament said, “I think Mahua Moitra is competent enough to fight her own battle.”

Banerjee also iterated that the parliamentary ethics committee cannot recommend expulsion when the matter in itself is subject to investigation. He said, “The portion ( of the report) that I have, the Chairman of the Ethics committee has written that if there’s any evidence against the person then they should investigate. However, my question is how can this body recommend expulsion when the matter is subject to investigation?”

He further illustrated that there are a number of privilege committee hearings due in the Ethics committee, specifically against Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ramesh Bidhuri, however, that has not taken place till now. He said, “There are several MPs in BJP against whom the privileges are due and no hearing takes place there. This shows that if someone wants to fight against the Government, against Adani’s malpractices this is how they are expelled from being an MP.”

He highlighted that the government had nothing in store to attack Moitra with, while comparing her situation with his, “They are also summoning me for four years, questioning me and when they are not being able to get anything they are tagging me in sometime else. This is their standard practice.”

Earlier, it was revealed through reports leaked on the Gautam Adani-owned NDTV that the ethics committee had recommended the expulsion of Moitra following reports from the committee of putting “national security” in jeopardy. Moitra took to X to tweet, “Glad to see Adani TV has a copy of Unethical Standing Committee Report BEFORE it is placed before Committee tomorrow. Just like Lok Pal referrals announced via the hired helpModi Adani Bhai Bhai Sabh Institutions Bye Bye.”

These developments took place after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey made claims of Lokpal directing a CBI probe. Following which, Moitra had asked the central agency to file an FIR on the alleged Adani coal scam of Rs 13,000 crore.

The 15 member ethical committee has found that the sharing of login credentials is amounted to unethical conduct.
