NEW DELHI: Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant’s inspiring return to cricket has earned him a nomination for the Laureus Comeback Award. His journey from a near-fatal accident to a heroic century is now recognized globally.
In December 2020, Pant survived a horrific car crash on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, suffering multiple fractures and ligament injuries. His career seemed in jeopardy, but after 629 days of intense rehabilitation, he made a stunning comeback in 2024. In his return Test match, he smashed a century against Bangladesh, equaling MS Dhoni’s record for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper.

The Laureus World Sports Awards, celebrating their 25th edition, will be held in Madrid on April 21. The winners will be chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, a panel of 69 sporting legends.
Pant’s Comeback Inspires the Sports World
Reacting to his nomination, Pant expressed gratitude: “I have always believed in self-belief and positivity. Surviving the accident gave me a second chance, and I worked hard to return stronger. This nomination is a recognition of everyone who supported me—my family, BCCI, doctors, trainers, and fans.”
His story has inspired cricket greats, including Laureus ambassador Yuvraj Singh, who said, “When I met Rishabh during his recovery, his positivity stood out. His never-give-up attitude made this comeback possible.”

Pant is nominated for the Laureus Comeback Award Rishabh Pant alongside elite athletes like gymnast Rebeca Andrade, swimmer Ariarne Titmus, and MotoGP champion Marc Márquez.
Other Laureus nominees include global stars such as Max Verstappen, Carlos Alcaraz, Simone Biles, and Aitana Bonmatí. The event will celebrate the best sporting achievements of 2024.
Winning the Laureus Comeback Award Rishabh Pant would place him among an elite list of Indian athletes recognized on this global platform, further highlighting cricket’s influence worldwide.
