NEW DELHI: In a pioneering move to boost the growth of India’s indigenous sport, the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) has announced a nationwide registration drive aimed at connecting 50 lakh school students to Kho Kho. The initiative, which targets students from classes 6 to 11, is designed to create a vibrant grassroots ecosystem for the sport as India readies to host the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup at New Delhi’s IGI Stadium from January 13 to 19, 2024.

Partnering with the Society of Digital Entrepreneurs (SODE), this digital drive has rapidly expanded, reaching over 7,132 cities and 1,160 schools across India, from Telangana in the south to Uttar Pradesh in the north. The campaign focuses on engaging students in schools, where they can learn and practice Kho Kho, laying the foundation for future champions.

KKFI General Secretary M.S. Tyagi, who has been involved with the sport since 1964, spoke about the importance of such initiatives: “Our goal is to reach over 50 lakh students before the World Cup. Each student connected to Kho Kho also connects their family, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the sport’s cultural roots.”

The digital nature of the registration drive leverages social media and online platforms to build a comprehensive network of young Kho Kho enthusiasts. Tyagi emphasized the benefits of this approach: “When one student registers, they bring in friends and family. This drive creates a growing community, building interest at a foundational level.”

Our aim is to take this indigenous sport to the world stage, making it a point of national pride.”

Registered students will gain access to regular updates, playing opportunities, and career guidance through KKFI’s digital platform. This holistic approach ensures a sustainable development pathway for young athletes, promoting India’s rich sporting heritage.

With Argentina joining the list of nations participating in the upcoming World Cup, Kho Kho is poised for an exciting era, ready to transform from a beloved local sport to a global phenomenon.
