THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram witnessed a shocking incident as the convoy of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan was attacked by a group of Students Federation of India (SFI) activists on its way to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The visibly angered governor has blamed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging a conspiracy behind the assault.

The attack on the Kerala governor’s vehicle, reportedly carried out by the members of SFI, which is the student wing of the CPI(M), occurred amid a statewide protest by the group over university senate appointments made by Khan. The governor firmly asserts that CM Vijayan was the mastermind behind the orchestrated attack.

Expressing his frustration, Khan criticised the police response, describing them as ‘helpless’ in the face of ‘goondas’ acting on the Chief Minister’s orders. “They hit my car from both sides. Will they allow anyone to come near the car of the Chief Minister?” questioned Khan, highlighting what he perceives as a breakdown in the constitutional machinery.

“The constitutional machinery seems to be collapsing. This cannot be allowed anymore. If he (Chief Minister) disagrees with something I do, it doesn’t mean that he can hatch a conspiracy to hurt me,” declared the governor during a media interaction after coming out of his official car.

Leader of the Opposition, VD Satheeshan, also condemned the incident, decrying the collapse of law and order in the state and demanding swift action against those responsible for the attack on the governor’s convoy.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Congress workers launched shoes at Vijayan’s vehicle near Kochi, while Left Front student activists waved black flags at Khan. The governor’s office has labelled the situation as extremely serious and unprecedented in the history of the state.

A senior official in the Kerala Raj Bhavan stated, “We have taken up the matter with the required authorities with utmost seriousness,” emphasising the gravity of the situation.
