NEW DELHI: Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who has served as the Chief Justice of India, leaves behind a storied legacy marked by legal accomplishments and a passion for cricket that dates back to his childhood days in Lutyens’ Delhi. Born on November 11, 1959, his early years were influenced by his father, Y.V. Chandrachud, himself a former Chief Justice of India. Former Attorney General K.K. Venugopal recently recalled a conversation with Justice Chandrachud’s father, saying, “When your father asked me whether to advise him to continue at the bar or accept judgeship, I said let him continue as a lawyer. But thank god he took judgeship, or we would have missed such a great judge.”

Before his judicial appointments, Justice Chandrachud built a solid foundation in law, being designated as a senior advocate by the Bombay High Court in 1998 and serving as an additional solicitor general. His first judicial role came in 2000 when he was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court. Years later, in 2013, he ascended to the position of Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, showcasing his steady rise in the judiciary.
