KOLKATA: India has reported 628 new COVID-19 cases in a single day taking the overall toll in new cases to over 4,000, on Monday.
According to the Union Health Ministry, the figure has now reached 4,50,09,248 total coronavirus infections in the country.
With the new variant slowly grappling the country, the ministry is now keeping a close watch on the situation, however, experts have said that the situation is not concerning.
The official source stated that a total of 63 JN.1 COVID variant cases have been reported in India till December 24.

According to state-wise data released by the ministry, over 34 have been reported from Goa, nine from Maharashtra, eight from Karnataka, six from Kerala, four from Tamil Nadu and two from Telangana, to date.
Presently, the ministry has confirmed one death from Kerala.
Earlier, the Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant, had sent a letter to all states and union territories, highlighting a need to be vigilant regarding the coronavirus situation.
“Centre issues advisory to States in view of a recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases and detection of first case of JN.1 variant in India” the Health Ministry’s advisory said.

Presently, the World Health Organization has urged countries in South-East Asia region to strengthen surveillance for people to take protective measures. These developments have taken place considering the increase in respiratory disease cases, including the new variant and influenza.
The WHO has classified the new variant as one of interest, having been reported in multiple countries recently.
