SRINAGAR: In a shocking incident, terrorists targeted a Jammu and Kashmir police officer who was working diligently to build bridges with youngsters through cricket, aiming to keep them away from the clutches of drugs and social evils.

Inspector Masroor Wani was shot and critically wounded in downtown Srinagar on Sunday while playing cricket with local boys at an Idgah ground. According to official reports, a pistol-wielding terrorist approached him and fired three bullets.

Immediately after the attack, the injured officer was rushed to the Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura. Reports indicate that he has undergone surgery and is currently in an intensive care unit (ICU) in critical condition.

The attack has prompted heightened security measures in the capital city of Srinagar, with security forces establishing multiple checkpoints and conducting vehicle searches.

The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Additional Director General of Police (Kashmir Zone) Vijay Kumar told The New Indian, “We have identified the terrorist. His name is Basit Dar, and he hails from Kulgam. He has been active for quite some time, working at the behest of his masters across the border.” He added that a Turkish revolver was used in the attack.

Inspector Masroor Wani’s dedication to building goodwill in the community and using cricket as a tool to steer youth away from drugs and social issues has drawn significant attention. The attack on him raises questions about the perils faced by those who work tirelessly to create a brighter future for the youth in the region.
