J&K Govt Announces Compensation for Pahalgam Attack Families

Summary

The Jammu and Kashmir Government announced an ex-gratia package for victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, offering financial aid and logistical support to affected families as rescue and evacuation operations continue.

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday declared a financial compensation package for the victims of the Pahalgam massacre, offering Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 2 lakh to those seriously hurt in the devastating terrorist attack.

Sharing the development on X, the office of the Chief Minister noted that the horrifying and inhumane strike against defenseless civilians was utterly unacceptable and devoid of any justification.

“We condemn this monstrosity in the harshest terms. The lives lost are irreplaceable. No monetary support can ease that pain, but as a gesture of solidarity and support, the government of Jammu and Kashmir is extending Rs 10 lakh to the kin of each deceased, Rs 2 lakh to those critically wounded, and Rs 1 lakh to individuals with minor injuries,” the statement read.

Authorities affirmed that arrangements were in place for the respectful repatriation of victims’ bodies to their hometowns. They also added that those injured were being given the finest available treatment.

“Our thoughts are with the grieving families. We share in your sorrow and assure you—our resolve will not be shaken by terror. The perpetrators will be hunted and held accountable,” the statement said.

Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also reacted, expressing anguish over the departure of vacationers from Kashmir in the wake of the tragedy that claimed 26 lives and injured over a dozen.

“It is painful to witness the departure of our guests from the Valley after the appalling incident in Pahalgam. Still, their decision is entirely understandable under the circumstances,” he posted on X.

To assist those stranded, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have started coordinating special flights out of Srinagar for tourists.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu highway (NH-44), which had been disrupted due to landslides and flooding, has partially resumed for one-way traffic. Special instructions have been issued to prioritize outbound vehicles carrying tourists.

“I have directed the administration to ensure regulated vehicular movement from Srinagar to Jammu, especially for tourists. The highway remains fragile in some patches, and efforts are underway to safely evacuate all those still stuck,” Omar added.
