SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution voicing deep sorrow and outrage over the savage terrorist assault in Pahalgam that claimed 26 innocent lives. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced the resolution during a specially convened session, which opened with members observing a solemn two-minute silence in memory of those slain in the recent tragedy.

โ€œThe Jammu and Kashmir Legislature stands firmly committed to nurturing an atmosphere of peace, growth, and inclusive prosperity for every citizen, while defeating malicious attempts to disrupt communal coexistence and national progress,โ€ the resolution affirmed.

Speaking during the session, Choudhary said, โ€œThis House registers its profound grief and outrage at the brutal and barbaric strike unleashed upon innocent civilians in Pahalgam on April 22.โ€

The House unequivocally denounced the barbarity, labelling the act as a shameful and cowardly crime that led to irreplaceable loss of lives.

Reading from the document, Choudhary emphasized, โ€œThese acts of terror strike at the heart of Kashmiriyat, violate the principles enshrined in our Constitution, and seek to undermine the long-standing tradition of unity, brotherhood, and peace that define Jammu and Kashmir and our country.โ€

The House reiterated its solidarity with the victimsโ€™ families, offering heartfelt condolences and pledging collective support to help them endure this grave loss.

The resolution saluted the ultimate sacrifice made by pony operator Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who laid down his life in an effort to shield tourists during the assault. His valor and sacrifice, it said, reflect the true soul of Kashmir and will remain a beacon of inspiration for generations.

The Assembly also praised the exceptional resilience, compassion, and solidarity exhibited by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the attack. The spontaneous rallies for peace and the widespread material and moral support extended to tourists were hailed as proof of the peopleโ€™s unwavering dedication to unity, social harmony, and lawful order.

Further, the resolution supported the diplomatic steps taken by the Union Government following the Cabinet Committee on Securityโ€™s emergency session after the attack.

The House voiced concern over the sinister motives behind selectively targeting the victims, urging all citizens and particularly the media to act responsibly and avoid aggravating communal tensions. Unity in the face of divisive provocations, it stressed, was more vital than ever.

The Assembly appealed to every state and Union territory to safeguard the dignity, security, and rights of Kashmiri students and citizens living or traveling outside Jammu and Kashmir, and to take firm action against any harassment or discrimination.

It also urged all political organizations, faith leaders, youth groups, civil society members, and media outlets across India to preserve calm, reject violence and hate, and work in unison to defend peace, national integrity, and constitutional values.

A discussion on the resolution was ongoing in the House as efforts were being made to pass it unanimously.
