Absconding': Special Court's ruling on former MP Jaya Prada In election code of conduct violation

NEW DELHI: Rampur court in Uttar Pradesh has declared former MP and actor Jaya Prada an “absconder” in connection with two cases of election code violations. The court directed the police to arrest her, and she is expected to be produced before the court on March 6.

The cases pertain to alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when Jaya Prada contested as the BJP candidate from Rampur but was defeated by Azam Khan of the Samajwadi Party.

Senior prosecution officer Amarnath Tiwari revealed that non-bailable warrants had been issued against Jaya Prada seven times after she failed to appear before the special MP-MLA court, which had issued summons multiple times. The court took a stern stance, declaring her an absconder when the police reported that she was evading arrest, and all her known mobile numbers were switched off.

The Superintendent of Police in Rampur has been directed to form a team under a circle officer to apprehend Jaya Prada and present her in court on March 6. Jaya Prada’s absence during court proceedings has resulted in a series of legal actions against her.

In response to the court’s decision, Jaya Prada’s legal troubles extend beyond the election code violation cases. Earlier, she was sentenced to six months imprisonment and fined Rs 5000 by a Chennai court.

This verdict stemmed from a complaint filed against Jaya Prada and her business partners for failing to pay the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) to labourers associated with a theatre she owned in Chennai.
