NEW DELHI: The IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium on 8 May 2025 was filled with electric energy, as the teams battled it out under the spotlight. On the field, cricketers and broadcasters were immersed in the game. However, behind the scenes, the nation was bracing for something far more serious: Operation Sindoor. As tensions escalated across the border, nearly 400 IPL personnel were evacuated without a single moment of panic or chaos. Former cricketer and IPL expert Anjum Chopra shares a first-hand account of how this massive evacuation unfolded smoothly.
A Buzzing Stadium, Oblivious to the Crisis
As the players focused on their game and the commentators kept their eyes on the action, nobody anticipated the events that would soon unfold. For those inside the stadium, it felt like just another IPL match night. Anjum Chopra, busy with her broadcast duties, recalls,
“There was no thought at all about what was happening outside our perimeter. We were fully engrossed in the match, which had an electrifying atmosphere.”
But things took an unexpected turn when the first floodlight went out.
Thank you, @RailMinIndia, for arranging a special Vande Bharat train on such short notice to ferry the players, support staff, commentators, production crew members, and operations staff to New Delhi.

The Moment of Uncertainty: A Floodlight Failure, or Something More?
At 9:29 pm, the floodlights in the stadium went dark, with the first one flickering off. It was initially chalked up to a simple technical glitch. However, as the other floodlights followed suit, there was a quiet shift in the atmosphere.
“When the first floodlight went out, we thought it was just a technical issue,” Chopra says. “But later, we learned it was related to security concerns.”
Despite the underlying tension, there was no immediate panic. Commentators and crew remained focused on the game, discussing potential impacts on the play.
“We were completely oblivious to anything outside because we were fully focused on cricket.”

The Calm Before the Evacuation
Then came the instruction: “Please pack up, let’s go.” Chopra recalls the moment clearly:
“We didn’t ask any questions. We just packed our things, and it struck me that there was no panic at all — not in anyone’s actions or voice.”
As the broadcast team quietly gathered their belongings, the staff calmly guided everyone to their vehicles, ready to leave the stadium.
“There was no chaos, no raised voices, no tension at all,” Chopra recalls. “It was just like exiting the stadium on any normal match day.”
Swift Coordination Behind the Scenes
While the world outside braced for news of the escalating border conflict, the operations team worked tirelessly behind the scenes, orchestrating a seamless evacuation. With nearly 400 people in the convoy — players, coaching staff, broadcasting personnel, and more — the logistics team ensured the evacuation was carried out smoothly.
Chopra was informed the following morning that they would be boarding a special train to Delhi.
“We had been receiving timely updates from our production team, and everyone knew what was expected of them.”
The special train, arranged by Indian Railways, was the next step in the coordinated evacuation. With people from all walks of the IPL ecosystem, the movement of the convoy was managed in an organized manner, with the Himachal Pradesh Police escorting the group until they crossed into Punjab, where local police took over the security.
A Well-Planned and Calm Journey
Chopra recalls the journey from Dharamshala as a well-managed operation.
“It was all very streamlined. We moved in batches, and the police ensured there was no disruption to the regular public.”
The train, a special service provided by IRCTC, was the final leg of the journey to Delhi.
For the nearly 400 people involved, the departure was calm, with no signs of disruption, despite the scale of the operation.
“Whether we were boarding or disembarking from the train, the staff from IRCTC were incredibly helpful,” Chopra says. “Everything was taken care of smoothly.”
Official Confirmation: IPL’s Suspension
As the convoy traveled, rumors about the suspension of the IPL swirled. While reports about the postponement were circulating, everyone waited for official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It wasn’t until later in the afternoon that the production team confirmed the IPL would be postponed for a week.
For Chopra, the journey was a testament to the power of coordination and clarity.
“It’s all about following instructions. We were well informed, and everything happened in a very coordinated manner,” she states.
Reflecting on the Experience: Heroes Behind the Scenes
Looking back at the extraordinary events, Chopra expresses immense gratitude toward the security forces and the operations team.
“Nearly 400 people were evacuated, and not a single person panicked. Everything was carried out in a calm, orderly manner. Hats off to the professionals who managed it all,” she says.
Her final reflection is a salute to those who protect and serve, often under difficult and uncertain circumstances.
“For the nation, they sacrifice tirelessly. Whatever gratitude we show will always fall short, because they work selflessly, all year round, to keep us safe.”
A Lesson in Calm Under Pressure
This episode not only highlights the scale of logistics involved in managing such a crisis but also serves as a reminder of the calm that can prevail in even the most chaotic of situations. In a world that often seems dominated by uncertainty, the story of the 2025 IPL evacuation stands as a remarkable example of professionalism, preparation, and unity in the face of adversity.
As Anjum Chopra rightly puts it,
“When everything is managed in a calm and coordinated way, it feels just like another day at the office.”
