India’s 280-run triumph over Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: India delivered a commanding performance, defeating Bangladesh by a massive 280-run margin in the first Test of the series in Chennai. This resounding victory marked a strong start to India’s crucial home stretch in the World Test Championship (WTC). With this win, Rohit Sharma & Co. solidified their position at the top of the WTC leaderboard, securing their seventh win in 10 Tests so far in the 2023-25 cycle, which will conclude with the final at Lord’s next June. Ravichandran Ashwin, who won the Player of the Match award, showcased an outstanding all-round performance, scoring a crucial century and taking six wickets, underlining his versatility.

Day 1: India’s Early Struggles
India faced an early setback in their first innings, losing three quick wickets, including the prized scalp of Virat Kohli for just 6 runs. Hasan Mahmud’s fiery spell left India struggling at 46/3. However, a gritty 62-run partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal (56) and Rishabh Pant (39) brought some stability. Ravichandran Ashwin’s unbeaten century (113) later proved vital in lifting India to a respectable total.

Day 2: Bangladesh’s Response
In reply, Bangladesh found themselves on the back foot, unable to withstand India’s disciplined bowling attack. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were instrumental in dismantling the opposition, reducing Bangladesh to 133/8 by the end of the day’s play, leaving them with a steep uphill task.

Day 3: Pant and Gill’s Brilliance
India’s second innings featured a scintillating display of batting from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119*). Their masterful partnership propelled India to declare at 287/4, setting Bangladesh an imposing target of 515 runs. While Najmul Hossain Shanto offered some resistance with a half-century, Bangladesh ended the day at 158/4, still trailing by 357 runs.

Day 4: Ashwin’s All-Round Brilliance Seals India’s Dominance

On the fourth and final day, Ravichandran Ashwin capped off a stunning all-round performance, following his century in the first innings with a six-wicket haul (6 for 88). Bangladesh, chasing a daunting 515, crumbled to 234 all out. Ashwin’s brilliant bowling dismantled the visitors’ resistance and secured an emphatic 280-run victory for India. His contributions with both bat and ball were pivotal in India’s comprehensive win, setting the tone for the remainder of the series.

This victory reinforced India’s dominance and highlighted their readiness for the WTC final push, with standout performances from Ashwin, Pant, and Gill demonstrating the team’s all-round strength.
