NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy inducted its fifth 25-tonne Bollard Pull (BP) Tug, ‘Ojas’, in a formal ceremony held on June 27, 2025, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. Commodore Chetan Kumar Singh, General Manager (Technical), Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam), presided over the event as the Chief Guest.

The tug is part of a six-vessel contract awarded to M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), Kolkata, on November 12, 2021. Designed and constructed indigenously by TRSL in accordance with Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) standards, the 25T BP Tugs serve multiple operational roles for the Indian Navy.

These versatile tugs are used for assisting naval ships and submarines during berthing, un-berthing, and manoeuvring in confined waters. Additionally, they offer afloat firefighting support to vessels at berth or anchorage and possess limited Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities.

The induction of Tug Ojas underscores the Navy’s continued focus on strengthening operational support infrastructure while promoting the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives of the Government of India.

Once fully inducted, all six tugs in the series will enhance the Navy’s operational efficiency at key naval bases.
