NEW DELHI: India’s campaign to reach the AFC Asian Cup 2027 came crashing down tonight as Singapore defeated the Blue Tigers 2–1 in a heart-wrenching match at the Fatorda Stadium, eliminating India from qualification contention.
India appeared to be in control early on, when Lallianzuala Chhangte struck in the 14th minute with a powerful left-footed effort to give the hosts the lead. The stadium erupted, optimism returned, and for long periods, India looked the superior side, dominating possession and pressuring Singapore’s defense.
However, Singapore showed resilience and composure, and just before halftime, Song Ui-young drew them level. The equaliser came as a dagger to Indian hopes: a well-timed run into the box, with deft movement to evade defenders, and he slotted past the goalkeeper to make it 1–1. The momentum visibly shifted.
In the 58th minute, Song struck again — this time breaking through India’s shaky defensive structure. A deep ball forward was controlled by Singapore’s attackers, and a quick interchange of passes exposed India’s backline. The pass reached Song in space, who made no mistake, rifling a precise shot into the net to put Singapore ahead 2–1.
India pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, making attacking substitutions and committing numbers forward. But despite a handful of promising chances, they were unable to pierce Singapore’s organized defense. Their efforts fell short, and as the final whistle blew, the realization of elimination sank in.
For India, defensive lapses at critical moments proved costly. The team had looked the more threatening side for long spells, but poor execution in the final third, and an inability to convert pressure into goals, compounded their undoing. Singapore, by contrast, were clinical when it mattered and defended doggedly under siege.
Coach Khalid Jamil acknowledged that concentration lapses had proved fatal. He lamented the timing of the goals conceded and emphasized the need for sharper focus, especially in crucial qualifiers. For the Indian squad, this marks a painful end to a campaign in which they had hoped to build on prior successes.
With this defeat, India exit the qualification race, while Singapore keep their hopes alive in Group C. The fans depart in stunned silence, reflecting on what might have been — and on Indian football’s persistent struggle to make an impact at continental level.
