Delhi grapples with record-breaking monsoon rainfall, faces severe flooding and disruptions
NEW DELHI: The national capital has received an unusually high amount of monsoon rainfall in recent days. On July 9, the city recorded 153 mm of rain in 24 hours, the highest for a single day in July since 1982. This has led to widespread flooding and waterlogging, as well as power outages and traffic disruptions.
The heavy rain has also caused some property damage. In one incident, a wall collapsed in a residential area, killing one person. The IMD has forecast more rain in the coming days, so authorities are urging people to be careful and avoid unnecessary travel.
The recent rainfall is a reminder of the challenges that Delhi faces during the monsoon season. The city’s drainage system is often overwhelmed by heavy rains, leading to flooding and waterlogging. This can cause health problems, damage property, and disrupt transportation.
The government has taken some steps to improve the city’s drainage system, but more needs to be done.
