Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari announced that the Indian Air Force will induct 3000 Agniveers in December as indigenous fighter jets and helicopters put up a dazzling air show in Chandigarh on the occasion of IAF Day on Saturday.

For the first time, the celebrations of the Indian Air Force Day are being held outside the national capital New Delhi.

Around 80 fighter planes and helicopters like Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Sukhoi, Mig-29, Jaguar, Rafale, IL-76, C-130J and Hawk took part in the fly-past over Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh.

Recently-inducted indigenously-developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) ‘Prachand’ showcased its prowess in a three-aircraft formation.

LCH Prachand has been developed by public defence equipment manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). It is armed with air-to-air missiles, 20 mm turret guns and rocket systems. The helicopter can destroy energy bunkers, drones, and tanks in high-altitude areas.

Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, Chinook, Apache and Mi-17 were among the helicopter that participated in the aerial show.

Speaking on the occasion, IAF chief Air Chief Marshan VR Chaudhari said: “It is my privilege to announce that the government has approved the creation of the Weapon Systems Branch for the officers in the Indian Air Force. This is the first time since independence that a new operational branch is being created.”

He also informed the audience that the force will begin recruiting female Agniveers starting next year.

“In December this year, we will be inducting 3000 Vayu Agniveers for their initial training,” he said.

Speaking about the security situation on the borders, the IAF chief said that the force took the challenges with “all guns blazing” in the last one year.

“In the last one year, we have had our share of challenges. The Air Force has taken these challenges head-on, and with all guns blazing,” he said, assuring the nation that the force is “well and truly prepared” to meet any security challenge facing the country.

He continued: “Continued deployment along the borders, HADR operations or rescuing stranded Indians from conflict zones, we have seen the entire spectrum of roles and tasks laid down for the Air Force being undertaken.”
