The recent spate of terrorist attacks in the Jammu region, especially in the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, has shattered the relative peace and stability that prevailed in this part of Jammu and Kashmir for the past few years. The attacks, which have claimed the lives of several security personnel and civilians, have exposed the vulnerability and volatility of the region, and the nefarious designs of the Pakistan-backed terrorist groups, who are trying to revive their activities and spread their network in the Jammu region. The attacks have also raised serious questions about the security situation the intelligence failure in the region, and the need for a more effective and coordinated response from the government and the security forces.

The Jammu region, with 10 districts, has seen improved security, reduced terrorist incidents, and increased public support for peace. In 2022, terrorist activities, infiltration attempts, and civilian deaths significantly decreased compared to 2020 figures. Recent terrorist attacks in the Jammu region, orchestrated by groups like PAFF, JeM, LeT, and HM operating from Pakistan, signify a resurgence of terrorism. Local support has facilitated these attacks, targeting security forces, police stations, public places, and civilians to instil fear and disrupt normalcy and development.

The revival of terrorism in the Jammu region is a clear indication of the shift in the strategy and the focus of Pakistan and its proxies, who have been facing increasing pressure and resistance in the Kashmir valley, due to the successful counter-terrorism operations, the abrogation of Article 370, and the restoration of the democratic process. Pakistan and its proxies have been trying to exploit the loopholes and gaps in the security and intelligence apparatus in the Jammu region and to take advantage of the complex and diverse demography, the long and porous border, and the socio-economic challenges in the region. Pakistan and its proxies have also been trying to incite and instigate communal and sectarian tensions, and to radicalize and recruit the youth in the region, to further their agenda of destabilizing and disintegrating India.

c Addressing security lapses and intelligence gaps is crucial. Strengthening border security, enhancing counter-terrorism operations, and fostering better coordination among involved agencies is imperative. Additionally, engaging and empowering the community, addressing grievances, providing basic amenities, and promoting peace while countering divisive forces are vital. Winning the hearts and minds of the people is essential to make them active partners in regional development.

The revival of terrorism in the Jammu region is a challenge and a threat to the nation, which needs to be confronted and defeated with determination and unity. The nation needs to stand with the people and the security forces of the region and support and appreciate their courage and resilience. The evil designs of Pakistan and its proxies need to be defeated and the sovereignty and integrity of the nation need to be upheld.
