New Delhi: The All India Glass Manufacturers’ Federation (AIGMF) has responded to recent media reports suggesting the presence of microplastics in beverages packaged in glass bottles, clarifying that such claims misinterpret a study by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES).

The ANSES study, which examined microplastics in various beverage containers, including plastic, cartons, cans, and glass, concluded that any plastic particles found in glass-bottled drinks originate from the painted metal caps, not the glass itself. The official findings, available on the ANSES website, emphasize that glass packaging remains free from microplastic contamination.

Mr. Rajesh Khosla, President of AIGMF, expressed disappointment that the glass industry was not consulted before the study’s release. He urged media and stakeholders to verify sources and understand glass manufacturing processes to prevent misinformation. “Glass has been a trusted packaging material for centuries and does not contribute to microplastic pollution,” he stated, referencing the European Container Glass Federation’s (FEVE) response to the study.

Mr. Vinit Kapur, Secretary of AIGMF, highlighted the fundamental differences between glass and plastic. “Glass is made from natural materials like silica sand and recycled glass, without any plastic components. Any microplastics detected likely come from external elements like caps or seals,” he explained.

Key Facts About Glass Packaging:
– Chemically inert and non-toxic
– 100% recyclable with no harmful additives
– Globally recognized as safe for food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals
– Critical for public health and environmental sustainability
