Singer Sonu Nigam has filed a complaint against those who manhandled him after his concert in Chembur on Monday night. The singer was performing at the Chembur fest organised by a Sena worker. After his performance, a man identified as Swapnil Phaterpekar, who is the son of a local MLA, heckled the singer for a selfie.

Following the incident, Singer Sonu Nigam reached Chembur police station and lodged a complaint. “I fell on the steps after I was pushed. Rabbani (Khan) came to save me and was pushed from behind. He could have been injured very badly. I filed a complaint because people must think about it when they force someone to take a selfie,” said Nigam, who looked visibly traumatized from the incident.

A case has been registered under IPC sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) on the basis of singer Sonu Nigam’s complaint.

The incident was first reported by The New Indian.

The incident took a political turn with the father of the accused, MLA Prakash Phaterpekar’s name being dragged. Phaterpekar is part of the Uddhav Thackeray-Sena camp. The incident comes right after the party lost its symbol and name to the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Swapnil’s sister and Yuva Sena Core Committee Member Suprada Phaterpekar, who had organised the Chembur concert admitted that it was her brother who was trying to take a selfie with the singer and in the process ended up hurting him.

“As organiser of the Chembur festival, I wish to shed light on some facts about the unfortunate incident that occurred at the end of Chembur Festival 2023. While Shri Sonu Nigam was being hurriedly ushered off the stage after delivering his performance, my brother was trying to take a selfie with him. Due to the rush and furore, a commotion ensued. The person who fell was taken to Zen hospital & was discharged after examination,” she tweeted.

She said the organisers have apologised to the singer. No arrests have been made by the police so far.

Sonu Nigam is known to be extremely vocal about his political views. His comments on ban on use of loudspeaker for Azaan had created ripples. In an interview with The New Indian Executive Editor Rohan Dua, he stood by his comment and said, “I have always spoken about this. When I spoke about it, there were calls for killing me. Comments like cut his head off , or shave his head were made. Later similar rules were made in Saudi and UAE. I was vindicated. But back then when I said it, even seasoned journalist took offence to what I said,” he said.
