The Delhi Police said on Saturday that they had neither arrested nor detained former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik.

Earlier in the day, there were speculations about the arrest of Malik after Delhi Police personnel were seen at his residence in the presence of a large number of people.

It was learned that people from Khaps had come to express their solidarity with Malik after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summoned him with regards to an insurance scheme that he had rejected during his tenure as J&K Governor.

Speaking to The New Indian, Malik had said, “Many people from Khap had come to visit me. I arranged for their food in DDA Park. Police say it was done without permission, so we offered to get arrested.”

Clarifying the situation, Sagar Preet Hooda, IPS, Special CP/Law & Order (Zone II), Delhi Police, said, “At around 10 am, the local police received information about an unknown tent being installed at the park. The SHO, RK Puram, and staff reached the spot and found that a protest was being planned by Satya Pal Malik and his supporters.”

Police informed the organisers that the park is a public space in a residential area near DPS RK Puram, and not designated for protests. They were advised to organise any such activities at Jantar Mantar, which is the designated site for such activities.

Despite the police’s efforts to persuade the organisers and participants to leave the park, they refused to do so. As a result, 24 persons, who refused to leave the site, were detained and sent to PS Jafarpur Kalan.

Later on, Malik himself arrived at the park and was informed about the situation. “He voluntarily went to the RK Puram Police Station along with 20 of his supporters at around 12:30 pm. He stayed there for two hours before leaving. His 24 supporters were released from PS Jafarpur Kalan around 3 pm,” Hooda said.
