NEW DELHI: Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande said the Indian Army is working to normalise the situation and ensure stability in Manipur. COAS Pande said the Assam Rifles and all units have displayed a lot of restraint.

Addressing the annual press conference at Delhi’s Manekshaw Centre ahead of Army Day, Pande said, “The Northeast has witnessed positive developments in the last year because of the proactive policies of the government and the violence parameters have overall come down. Manipur witnessed violence in May last year, but with the combined efforts by the state administration, Army and Assam Rifles, they have been able to stabilise the situation. We are working to normalise the situation and ensure stability.”

Pande also said that both India and China continue to hold talks at military and diplomatic levels to find a resolution to the remaining issues. While speaking about the violence in Jammu and Kashmir, Pande said that while there has been a drop in overall incidents of violence in the union territory (UT), such incidents have increased in the Rajouri-Poonch sector.

“The situation and terrorist activities in Rajouri and Poonch in the last 5-6 months have been an issue of concern to us. By 2003, terrorism in this area was fully disseminated and peace was established there till 2017-18. Because peace is coming in the valley, our adversaries are encouraging proxy tanzeems in the area,” he stated.
