The political drama in West Bengal continues to churn out new episodes, the latest being the ‘disappearance’ and ‘reappearance’ of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Mukul Roy.

Roy’s ‘disappearance’ from West Bengal, as claimed by his son Subhranshu Roy, and his ‘reappearance’ in New Delhi later in the night have certainly generated buzz.

The move came hours after Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari tweeted about the involvement of Roy’s son Subhranshu, who is also a former TMC MLA, in the SSC scam.

After releasing a list of names, Adhikari tweeted, “The involvement of these former TMC MLAs also needs to be investigated. That’s it for today, keep watching this space for more revelations in the future…”

The tweet is notable because it contains two images, one of which has the name Subhranshu Roy in bold yellow.

Speculations are rife in West Bengal political circles, about the ‘disappearance’ and ‘reappearance’ of 68-year-old Roy. Political circles are abuzz with questions: Is Roy senior, who had earlier joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from TMC before again going back, looking to rekindle his ties with the BJP after being sidelined by TMC? Is Roy senior’s move to Delhi an effort to save his son? Who are the leaders that he is planning to meet in Delhi?

“I used to come to Delhi often. This time it is no different. I am here on a personal visit,” Roy senior said at the Delhi airport. “I am not in Delhi for any specific reason. I will be here till I need to be,” he added.

Speaking about Roy senior’s possible meeting with central BJP leaders, Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said, “I do not know anything about this incident. He was at our party long ago.”

Mukul Roy joined the BJP in 2017 but returned to the TMC four years later. He had quit the party following differences with party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

As national vice president of the BJP, Roy inducted many senior figures from the TMC into the party fold, resulting in the BJP’s strong performance in the 2021 polls.

Roy senior had won the 2021 assembly elections on a BJP ticket but returned to the TMC as many leaders switched sides following the TMC’s win. Roy senior has been keeping a low profile since his return to the Mamata Banerjee-led party from the BJP.
