Dhoni resigns as CSK captain, Gaikwad assumes role

NEW DELHI : In a significant shift within the Chennai Super Kings’ camp,Mahendra Singh Dhoni has relinquished his role as captain.The seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman, who led the team to five Indian Premier League (IPL) triumphs, will pass the leadership mantle to the young and dynamic Ruturaj Gaikwad for the upcoming 2024 season.

 “MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings captaincy to Rituraj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Rituraj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in the IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” CSK wrote in its statement on Thursday.

Under Dhoni’s astute captaincy, CSK emerged as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, clinching the title five times. His leadership has been pivotal in establishing a winning legacy for the team, which Gaikwad will now inherit as he takes on the captaincy.

As the new season approaches, it’s time for a fresh face to steer the ship. Gaikwad, known for his batting prowess and strategic acumen, is set to lead the team against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the season opener. The decision for Dhoni to step down did not come lightly. At 42, he had hinted at the possibility of the 2023 season being his last. Despite this, his commitment to the team remains unwavering, as he will continue to don the yellow jersey and contribute on the field.
