Special Cell of the Delhi Police has registered an FIR in connection with vandalism and desecration of Indian national flag at the India high commission in London by Khalistan supporters.

The case has been registered against unknown persons under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, according to police sources.

On March 19, dozens of Khalistani elements broke into the Indian high commission, pulled down the Tricolour and vandalised the property in protest against police crackdown on radical Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh in India.

The case was registered on the direction of the Union home ministry, which has instructed the force to take appropriate legal action.

“Taking cognisance of the report, the Delhi Police has registered a case under appropriate sections of the IPC, UAPA and PDPP Act and the Special Cell has started the investigation as it involves unlawful activities carried out by certain persons holding Indian nationality abroad,” said a police officer.

After the vandalism, India lodged a strong protest with the UK government for its failure to provide adequate security to the Indian mission. In protest, the Indian government removed the security cover deployed outside the UK embassy in Delhi.

Khalistanis have been protesting in London and Canada as police continue its hunt for Amritpal, who has been able to dodge the force by changing his outfit and changing hideouts for the past six days.

Amritpal, who returned to India from last year, came to national limelight when he led thousands of his supporters to storm Ajnala police station in Amritsar and forced the government to release his comrade – a man accused of abduction in February.

He is currently suspected to be in Uttarakhand. Around two hundred of his supporters have been either detained or arrested.

A month ago, Delhi Police Special Cell had registered an FIR in connection with pro-Khalistan slogans written on the walls in West Delhi. Two persons were arrested for writing the slogans. Investigators have found that the duo was directed to do such an act by Khalistani-ISI handers sitting abroad.
