Delhi Police Register Case After Nupur Sharma Alleges Death Threats

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Monday registered a case on the complaint of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma over the alleged death threats to her and launched a probe. The Delhi Police has also sent notices to Twitter, officials said.

A Delhi Police spokesperson said that a complaint was received from Sharma on May 28 in the IFSO unit of the Special Cell against various persons regarding death threats and targeted hatred toward her.

Following the complaint, the IFSO unit registered a case under sections 506, 507 and 509 of the IPC at Special Cell.

The police said that during the investigation another complaint of Sharma was received against certain persons regarding promoting enmity. “After examining the said complaint, section 153A IPC was added in this case,” the police official said, adding that notices have been sent to Twitter Inc.

“Reply from Twitter is awaited,” the official said.

Sharma and Delhi BJP leader Naveen Jindal were suspended from the party over their derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim community during a live news debate show.

The BJP suspended Sharma, one of its national spokespersons, from the party’s primary membership for her remarks in a television debate. The BJP’s Delhi unit meanwhile expelled Jindal, who heads the party’s media unit in Delhi, for his tweets.

Following her suspension from the party, Sharma put out a tweet apologising for hurting people’s sentiments but said she was only responding to comments made against “Mahadev” (Lord Shiva).

The two leaders were suspended from the party after three key Gulf countries summoned India’s ambassadors and expressed strong protest and condemnation.
