A Chinese national arrested by security forces in the Gauriphanta PS area of the Lakhimpur Kheri district near the Indo-Nepal border on February 17 had arrived with ‘dangerous intentions’, authorities said.

The 26-year-old Chinese man, identified as Wang Goujun, was held in Lakhimpur Kheri on Friday night after he could not produce valid documents regarding his stay in India.

At the time of the arrest, the accused, a resident of Maoming district in China’s Guangdong Province, was allegedly trying to cross over to Nepal.

A case had been lodged against the Chinese national at Lakhimpur’s Gaurifanta police station under sections 3 and 12 of the Passport Act, 1967, and section 14 of the Foreigners’ Act, 1946, after his arrest.

Reportedly, the police slapped additional charges under IPC sections 121 and 121A against the accused, in addition to demanding five days of police remand for further investigation. The local court granted police custody till February 24.

Speaking to The New Indian, Senior Prosecution Officer (SPO) SP Yadav said that the seriousness of the matter came to light after rigorous interrogation. “After interrogation, we lodged additional charges against the accused for serious crimes under Section 121 and 121A, for conspiring and waging war against the government. We are investigating the matter,” Yadav said.

According to the FIR lodged on the day of his arrest, the accused, Wang Goujun, had arrived in the district from Delhi through Palia town. However, the personnel of the 39th battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), deployed at the Gaurifanta border outpost, apprehended him while he was trying to cross over to Nepal. He was later handed over to the police for further proceedings.
