The Biju Janata Dal (BJD)-led Odisha government and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaged in a war of words regarding the entry of social media influencer Kamiya Jani to the historic Jagannath Temple in Puri.

The Instagram influencer, popularly known as @curlytales, posted a video focusing on the culture of the temple, featuring VK Pandian, a bureaucrat turned BJD leader. In the video, the duo could be seen discussing the significance of the ‘Mahaprasad’, the ongoing heritage corridor project and other aspects related to temple development.

However, the BJP raised concerns about Jani, alleging her to be a promoter of beef consumption. The saffron party questioned how she was allowed to access the shrine where non-Hindu entry is strictly prohibited.

Amid the escalating controversy, Jani took to Instagram to address the issue, stating, “As an Indian, my mission is to take Indian culture and heritage to the world.” She clarified that she has never consumed beef, emphasising her commitment to showcasing Indian heritage globally.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) refuted the allegations, stating, “The allegation made by a certain political party about a YouTube influencer taking a camera to the temple premises is completely baseless.” Further, the SJTA invited “anyone” with evidence to present it for investigation, pledging necessary action if required.

Odisha BJP general secretary Jatin Mohanty expressed concern, stating that the incident has hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Hindus. He alleged that a video camera, prohibited by the SJTA, was used on the temple premises, demanding a case against Pandian and the influencer under IPC Section 295A for hurting religious sentiments.

The BJP claimed that Pandian facilitated Jani’s entry into the temple, accusing her of promoting beef consumption, which is against the rules of the Srimandir.

In response, the BJD held a press conference, criticising the BJP for making baseless allegations. They accused the Opposition of becoming intolerant regarding the temple’s development.

The ruling party clarified that Jani had taken ‘Mahaprasad’ at Radha Ballav ‘Mutt’ (monastery) and not inside the temple premises, emphasising that cameras were not allowed inside the temple.

While Pandian remained unavailable for comment, the BJD concluded its statement by saying, “Let Lord Jagannath bless the BJP leaders to overcome their narrow mindset.
