NEW DELHI: The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested two Indian nationals in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab on Sunday. The individuals were found in possession of approximately 550 grams of heroin, two mobile phones, and a Hero Splendor motorcycle. The operation took place near the village of Chanduwadala (Bordering Village of India and Pakistan), with both suspects being residents of the same village.
The BSF acted on credible intelligence regarding drone activity in the area. At approximately 5:15 PM, during a search operation, troops apprehended the two suspects along with a packet suspected to contain heroin. A metal hook attached to the packet suggests a possible case of drone dropping, indicating the evolving methods employed by smugglers to transport contraband across the border.

This incident underscores the increasing use of drones in cross-border smuggling operations. In recent years, there has been a notable rise in the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles to ferry narcotics and other illicit goods across the India-Pakistan border. The BSF has been actively monitoring and countering such activities, adapting its strategies to address the technological advancements utilized by smugglers.
The BSF’s vigilance has led to several successful interceptions in the past. For instance, in a joint operation with the Punjab Police in December 2024, the BSF recovered heroin packets from border areas in Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur districts.

The arrested individuals, being residents of Chanduwadala village, indicate that smugglers often rely on local networks to facilitate their operations.
Approximately 80 simultaneous coordinated patrols have been carried out, along with multiple border coordination meetings at various levels, to enhance security measures and improve intelligence sharing.
The force continues to work closely with other security agencies and local authorities to ensure the safety and security of the nation’s borders.
