KOLKATA: The Mamata Banerjee government sacked tainted mantri Partha Chatterjee on Thursday, six days after he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the teacher recruitment scam.

“Partha Chatterjee, minister in charge, department of industry, commerce and enterprises, department of information technology and electronics, department of parliamentary affairs and department of public enterprises and industrial reconstruction, Govt of West Bengal is hereby relieved of his duties as minister in charge of the aforesaid departments with effect from 28th day of July, 2022,” the government order reads.

The agency has recovered more than Rs 51 crore, jewellery and over two dozen expensive smartphones from two flats of Partha’s associate Arpita.

Both Partha and Arpita have been arrested by the ED in the multi-crore scam.

Since the recovery of huge stashes of cash and jewellery and their arrested, Mamata-led Trinamool Congress was facing criticism from political opponent and party leaders alike for “protecting” the minister.
