New Delhi: AAP national convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lost the New Delhi Assembly constituency by a margin of 3000 votes
Kejriwal has secured 22057 votes, while BJP candidate Parvesh Verma got 25057 votes, according to Election Commission of India data.
Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, just gained 3873 votes.
Across Delhi, the BJP has taken the lead in 48 out of 70 constituencies, while AAP is ahead in 22. Congress has yet to establish a lead in any seat. The New Delhi constituency is witnessing a high-stakes battle, with Kejriwal facing a tough challenge from Verma and Dikshit.
Counting for all 70 constituencies began at 8 AM today, and the final outcome will determine whether AAP secures a fourth consecutive term or if the BJP returns to power in Delhi after over 26 years.
The New Delhi constituency recorded a voter turnout of 56.41%. Kejriwal has held this seat since 2013, when he defeated Congress veteran Sheila Dikshit by over 25,000 votes.
In 2020, he won by a margin of 21,687 votes against BJPโs Sunil Kumar Yadav. Historically, Congress has won this seat four times since 1977, while AAP has secured it three times.
The BJP, which has not won the New Delhi seat since 1977, is aiming to make a strong statement by defeating Kejriwal in this high-profile contest.
A BJP victory in the Delhi Assembly elections would mark its return to power in the national capital, ending AAPโs decade-long dominance.
Meanwhile, Congress, which governed Delhi for 15 years until 2013, is striving to regain lost ground after failing to win a single seat in the last two elections.
