PATNA: Even as the murder of dreaded UP mafia Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in police custody drew mix reactions, the Bihar unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday advised the state police to follow their counterparts in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to tackle rising crimes.

BJP leaders have called on chief minister Nitish Kumar to learn something from UP CM Yogi Adityanath and give a free hand to the Bihar Police to end the mafia culture in the state.

On Saturday night, Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead by three attackers when the UP Police was taking them to a hospital for a medical examination in Prayagraj. A few days back, Atiq’s son Asad was killed in an encounter with the UP Police in Jhansi district.

Reacting on the murder of Atiq, who ran an organized crime syndicate in UP for decades, Bihar BJP president Samrat Chaudhary said: “Bihar Police should be given a free hand. I request the state government not to make the police wear bangles. Police should be given full freedom so that the rule of law can be established.”

Atik, the mafia don-turned-politician, had been accused in several criminal cases, including the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal and the recent murder of Umesh Pal. His son Asad was accused of firing the shots that led to the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal on February 24.

Choudhary also praised the UP Police for their handling of the situation, saying that there was no atmosphere of fear or terror in the state. He stated that criminals were being eradicated in UP and that even after committing a crime, they could not escape the fear of CM Yogi Adityanath.

State BJP spokesperson Arvind Singh also issued a statement on the murder of Atiq and Ashraf, saying that if criminals commit crimes, they will be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Neeraj Kumar ‘Bablu’ said that the Yogi government was eradicating criminals in Uttar Pradesh. “If such a dreaded criminal is killed, why are some people getting stomach pain? There is so much fear of Baba Yogi among criminals in UP that they can’t escape after committing a crime,” the BJP legislator said.
