The State Vigilance Unit (SVU) of Bihar conducted raids on eight premises of Purnia Superintendent of Police (SP) Daya Shankar on Tuesday and recovered Rs 72 lakh in cash and jewellery.
There were murmurs about his involvement in corruption after which SVU chief ADG Nayyar Hasnain Khan constituted seven teams to raid his office and official residence. The SVU had been questioning people associated with him for a long time to gather information about his activities.
In the investigation, it was confirmed that Daya Shankar, a 2016 batch IPS officer, created many movable and immovable assets which are disproportionately higher than his sources of income.
“Simultaneous searches are going on in the office and residential premises of Daya Shankar in Purnia and Patna. Altogether, seven locations are being searched on the strength of search warrants issued by the trial court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Patna,” SUV chief Khan told the media.
He also stated SUV registered a case under sections 13(1)(a) and 13(1)(b), 13(2) and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code against him. “Further updates about the outcome of searches would be given later at the end of the SUV’s action,” he added.
Earlier, the SVU registered an FIR in its police station in Patna and also issued a search warrant against him. The SVU team also carried out raids in the house of Sadar police station SHO Sanjay Kumar Singh.
After Daya Shankar’s case has come to light, investigative agencies are pulling out all the stops to nab other corrupt police officials in Bihar. Many raids are being conducted by the Special Vigilance Team at the premises of at least half a dozen policemen. More than 20 vigilant officers are involved in these searches which are taking place amid tight security arrangements.
After the stern action by SVU, there is a sense of fear among police officials in the state.
