Doctors at Motihari sadar hospital suggest it is a case of diarrhoea and food poisioning

While Bihar reported yet another case of death due to the consumption of spurious liquor, there is an eerie silence from the police and local administration.

Following the deaths of eight people, with seven still in critical condition, in the last 24 hours, there is unrest in the Math Lohiyar area of the district.

Villagers claim that the deceased drank spurious liquor, however, the doctors at Sadar Hospital, where the villagers were admitted, suggest it was a case of diarrhoea and food poisoning in their preliminary report.

Anjani Kumar, a civil surgeon at Sadar Hospital, said, “It is difficult to say the exact cause of death till the final report comes out.”

To make matters worse, the families of seven deceased people performed the last rites without a post-mortem.

In Math Lohiyar, one Naval Das and his son Paramendra died within four hours. Their relatives performed their last rites without a post-mortem. The condition of Paramendra’s wife is said to be critical.

Meanwhile, one Harilal Singh from the same village was also in critical condition. He is undergoing treatment in a private nursing home in the city.

Another villager, 35-year-old Rameshwar Ram, too died in a private clinic in Bairiya Bazaar in the Turkaulia police station area. “He suddenly had a headache in the morning. He was admitted for treatment but died in the evening,” his relatives said.

Meanwhile, the situation in the village is tense, and the police have been deployed in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident.

Interestingly, the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government implemented a prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state in 2016.

However, without proper checks, the state has seen a rise in deaths due to the consumption of spurious liquor. Last year, more than 80 people lost their lives in Bihar’s Saran and Chhapra districts, marking the biggest tragedy of this kind since the prohibition was put in place.
