PATNA, BIHAR: An absconding member of the banned organisation Popular Front of India (PFI), involved in anti-national activities, has been apprehended in Tamil Nadu.

The arrested individual, identified as Mumtaz Ansari, was wanted in connection with a case registered at the Phulwari Sharif police station in Patna.

The case, registered on July 12 last year, was later taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Mumtaz Ansari, a resident of Bihar’s East Champaran district, was arrested by a team from the Bihar Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Monday morning after a 10-day operation.

Confirming the arrest, ADG Headquarters Jitendra Singh Gangwar said, “Mumtaz Ansari had fled Bihar after the case was filed in Phulwari Sharif and had been on the run ever since. The ATS received specific information that he had taken refuge in Tamil Nadu and was in hiding.”

Acting on this tip-off, the Bihar team tracked him for 10 days and discovered that he was employed at a company named Penar in Kannigai Pair village, located in the Thiruvallur district, approximately 30 kilometres from Chennai.

“The ATS team gathered substantial intelligence during their surveillance and subsequently arrested Mumtaz Ansari, confirming his identity. He was promptly handed over to the National Investigation Agency,” Gangwar said.

ADG Headquarters described the operation as a commendable example of inter-state police cooperation and stated that further investigations into Ansari’s criminal history are underway.

“Preliminary findings indicate that Mumtaz Ansari has completed education up to the ninth grade and does not hold a significant job. Authorities are currently examining records to determine if he has any prior criminal involvement in other police jurisdictions,” Gangwar added.

It is worth noting that the NIA had previously arrested 14 individuals in connection with the Phulwari Sharif case, all of whom were subsequently incarcerated. On March 17 of this year, Ishaad Alam was also apprehended and handed over to the NIA.
