Assam to get biggest sports and medical complex in entire East India

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various development initiatives worth more than Rs 11,000 crore during a public programme in Guwahati, on February 4.

Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of projects worth Rs. 11,000 crore in Guwahati.

One of the key projects for which the foundation stone will be laid by the Prime Minister includes Maa Kamakhya Divya Pariyojana (Maa Kamakhya Access Corridor), which has been sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE) scheme. It will provide world-class amenities to pilgrims visiting the Kamakhya temple.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on February 2 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stones for major healthcare initiatives. The highlight of the visit is the extensive remodelling of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) which is poised to become the biggest medical centre in eastern India. “The current GMCH building will be transformed into a modern facility and a new hospital will be constructed, capable of treating 3500 patients simultaneously. The project cost will be Rs 3,250 crores,” added the Assam CM.

Chief Minister Sarma, addressing the media, outlined the ambitious project, stating that the current GMCH building would be transformed into a new-age facility, accommodating around 3,500 patients simultaneously. The project, estimated at Rs 3250 crores, aims to construct a state-of-the-art hospital to cater to the increasing healthcare needs of the region.

Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of multiple road upgradation projects worth over Rs. 3400 crore, under which 43 roads including 38 bridges will be upgraded as part of the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Corridor Connectivity. Prime Minister will inaugurate two 4-laning projects, namely Dolabari to Jamuguri and Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur. These projects will help improve the connectivity to Itanagar and boost the region’s overall economic development.

To harness the tremendous sports potential of the region, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of projects to boost the sports infrastructure in the state. The projects include an international standards sports stadium in Chandrapur, and the upgradation of Nehru stadium as a FIFA standard football stadium. On the ambitious project, Assam CM stated that the stadium capacity will be 30,000  “This will be the biggest Sports Complex in Eastern India and will host offices of all Sports Association in the state,” added the Assam CM.

Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the development of the infrastructure of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Further, the foundation stone for the development of a medical college at Karimganj will also be laid by him.
