Army Jawan Killed In Brawl Between Kanwariyas

HARIDWAR: A 25-year-old Indian Army jawan died in a scuffle between two groups of Kanwar pilgrims on Tuesday in Roorkee in Haridwar district.

Devendra Chouhan, SHO of Civil Lines Kotwali police station, said, “The case has been registered against 25 unidentified kanwariyas on the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. We have also detained six suspects in connection.”

The police are waiting for the post-mortem report for further action.

Sources from the department said that the reason behind the death of the jawan is said to be excessive bleeding due to head injury.

The jawan named Kartik, a resident of Sisauli village of Muzaffarnagar district, was posted in Gujarat in the Jat regiment of the Army. He was on leave and travelled to Haridwar with his friend Omendra Singh driving a bike.

While returning from Haridwar, a group of Kanwariyas from Haryana had a confrontation on a flyover built at the turn of Nagla Imarti village in Haridwar.

According to the police, a group of Kanwariyas from Haryana attacked Kartik and his friend with lathis and sharp-edged weapons. The jawan was seriously injured and was rushed to a private hospital following which he was referred to Roorkee Civil Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
