NEW DELHI: On October 28, during a ferocious counter-terror operation, a Belgian Malinois named Phantom gave his life in the Battal district of Jammu while hunting terrorists. Since August 2022, when he was drafted into the Indian Army, Phantom has been instrumental in several high-stakes operations. He tragically died from his wounds sustained during this operation while assisting troops during a crucial stage of the chase.

Terrorists ambushed an army convoy in Battal’s deep woods early in the morning, sparking the start of the operation. In keeping with a larger plan by Pakistan-sponsored organizations to subvert the Army’s authority in the area, the attackers sought to disturb the tranquillity during the Diwali season. Terrorists have increasingly moved their operations closer to the Line of Control due to increased troop density and strong counter-infiltration measures, which have resulted in desperate attempts to cause mayhem.

The military reacted quickly, engaging the terrorists and forcing them back into the dense woodland. To strengthen the cordon, reinforcements were sent in, including special forces and a neighbouring motorized column used for training. Tracking the terrorists’ movements across the difficult terrain was made possible in large part by Phantom, a highly skilled sniffer dog. Because of his acute skills, soldiers were able to tighten the circle around the assailants by spotting hidden bombs and possible escape routes.

While attempting to defend the troops from a terrorist attack, Phantom tragically suffered fatal injuries during a close encounter. His valour played a crucial role in controlling the threat, highlighting the vital role that the Army’s canine soldiers play. In their homage to Phantom, senior officials emphasized that “his bravery saved lives and was pivotal to the operation’s success.”

With the help of cutting-edge technology like drones and night vision gear, the operation effectively eliminated the terrorist threat without causing any losses to the forces. Phantom’s sacrifice is a potent reminder of the unsung but vital responsibilities that canine heroes play in preserving national security, highlighting the Indian Army’s and the Jammu community’s tenacity in maintaining peace.
