NEW DELHI: Students from the Aligarh Muslim University recently inaugurated their first student-run monthly newsletter.

This newsletter, published on Tuesday, will provide comprehensive updates on the events and activities in and around the university on a monthly basis.

According to them, the day had been chosen by AMU students to pay tribute to Islamic reformer Sir Syed Ahmed Khan who had laid the foundation stones of the institution. Sir Syed was a harbinger of Hindu-Muslim unity and education among the Muslim community.

The AMU Journal was initially started by a group of students at AMU in 2016, as an online media portal. The inauguration took place at Strachey Hall, which is the first building on the AMU campus, in coordination with the Training and Placement Office (General).

Hashim Azmi, one of the newsletter’s editors, congratulated the AMU Journal team for making this possible. He said, “The newsletter is one of its kind, started by the students of AMU. It will surely foster the need to get authentic news in and around the AMU campus and will debunk the fake news that is being spread in the name of AMU. This initiative will be beneficial to the entire Aligarh fraternity.”

The secretary of AMU’s Debating and Literary Club, Afiya Rizvi, also highlighted how the newsletter can be used as a reliable source of information regarding AMU.

By the end of the event, all the students present inside the hall were presented with a copy of the newsletter. Following this the newsletter’s editors elaborated on their objectives to “provide authentic information and nurture a positive atmosphere within the university and beyond.”

The varsity had recently come on the news for having demonstrated in support of the Palestinian cause, highlighting that the “time for Palestinian freedom is now”. Following the demonstrations, four students were booked by the police for taking out the protest march.
