Amity University hosts workshop on pre-incubation entrepreneurship development in Space Sector

The workshop was aimed at aspiring space entrepreneurs and individuals with innovative ideas in the space sector, providing them with early-stage support and mentorship to transform their concepts into viable businesses.

NEW DELHI: The Amity Foundation for Science Technology & Innovation Alliances (AFSTIA) at Amity University Noida, in collaboration with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), Department of Space, Government of India, recently organized a workshop titled “Pre-Incubation Entrepreneurship (PIE) Development Programme.” The workshop was aimed at aspiring space entrepreneurs and individuals with innovative ideas in the space sector, providing them with early-stage support and mentorship to transform their concepts into viable businesses.

The event saw participation from over 1,000 students and professionals from various universities and institutions across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), including IIT Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi Technological University, and the National Institute of Technology, among others.

Vinod Kumar, Director of the Promotion Directorate at IN-SPACe, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the historical significance of the Indian Space Industry. He recalled the launch of India’s first indigenous sounding rocket, Rohini-75, on November 20, 1967, marking a new era for the sector. He emphasized the government’s ongoing space sector reforms under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which led to the formation of IN-SPACe on June 24, 2020. This autonomous body enables private entities to engage in end-to-end space activities.

Kumar also spoke about the future of the space industry, noting the growing importance of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and emerging trends in satellite communication, such as Heavy GEO Satellites, Flexible Satellites, Advanced Mobile Satellites, and Quantum Communication. He also mentioned space tourism as a rapidly growing business prospect, predicting that human beings will eventually live, work, and vacation in space, opening up limitless opportunities in the Space Science & Technology sector.

Prof. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor of Amity University, Uttar Pradesh, welcomed the participants, emphasizing the workshop’s role as a comprehensive platform for exploring the entire journey from ideation to commercialization. She highlighted the significance of space technology for India’s future and encouraged students to seize the opportunity to learn, innovate, and develop their prototypes.

The PIE Development Programme is designed to foster young entrepreneurs’ interest in the space domain, identify and encourage innovation, and provide guidance on transforming ideas into prototypes. The 21-month program is structured in three stages: ideate, innovate, and demonstrate. It aims to benefit early-stage space startups, individuals with space-related ideas, and students and researchers with a passion for space technology.

W Selvamurthy, President of the Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation, addressed the participants, underscoring the significance of space science and technology in shaping India’s scientific and technological landscape. He noted that the workshop would offer participants valuable insights into the career opportunities provided by IN-SPACe and the broader space sector.

During the workshop, Deepak Kumar Panda, Deputy Director of PR & Communication, Promotion Directorate at IN-SPACe, detailed the online application process for the program. The event concluded with participants sharing their views, followed by a Q&A session.
