NEW DELHI: In a landmark move set to reshape the future of Indian athletes, Amity University Online (AUO) and Hockey India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer higher education opportunities tailored for hockey players across all levels—international, national, and state.
This collaboration is designed to empower athletes by providing access to flexible, high-quality education, allowing them to pursue academic goals without interrupting their sporting careers.
Under the partnership, AUO has launched a scholarship initiative—CHAMPS (Celebrating Heroes with Amity Merit Program Scholarships)—offering athletes up to 100% scholarships. In addition, all enrolled athletes will receive free access to a three-month Certificate Course in Sports Psychology to enhance mental strength and performance.

The MoU was signed in the presence of senior dignitaries including Shri Bhola Nath Singh, Secretary General, Hockey India; Ajit Chauhan, Chairman, Amity University Online; and Shri Sekar J Manoharan, Treasurer, Hockey India.

The occasion also marked a significant first: Indian Women’s Hockey Team Captain Salima Tete and defender Jyoti officially enrolled in AUO’s Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and MBA in Marketing programs, respectively, becoming the first beneficiaries of the initiative.
“Education has always been a dream I had to set aside to pursue hockey,” said Salima Tete. “With this scholarship and Amity University Online’s flexibility, I can now continue my education without compromising my game.”
Jyoti echoed the sentiment:
“The online format allows us to learn around our hectic schedules. It’s a big step for athletes like us to secure a future beyond hockey.”
Ajit Chauhan, Chairman of AUO, emphasized the broader impact of the program:
“This is not just about academics—it’s about empowering athletes to thrive both on and off the field. For many underprivileged players, this could be life-changing.”
Shri Bhola Nath, Secretary General of Hockey India, added:
“Many athletes—especially women—are forced to abandon education after the 12th due to rigorous training. This partnership lets them chase both dreams.”
Women’s Team Chief Coach Harendra Singh called the move “life-changing,” noting that it bridges the gap between sporting excellence and academic achievement—particularly vital for athletes from modest backgrounds.
The scholarship program is open to active Hockey India players from the district to international level. Courses offered include B.Com, B.Sc, MBA, and several other undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
The announcement coincides with a historic milestone—May 20th marks 100 years of Hockey India, celebrated nationwide as “Hockey Day”, commemorating a century of India’s hockey legacy.
This MoU sets a new benchmark in holistic athlete development, marking the first time a national sports federation has launched such a comprehensive education initiative for players at all competitive levels.
