NEW DELHI: In the wake of a tragic incident in Vadodara, where a 23-year-old law student, allegedly under the influence, caused a fatal accident resulting in one death and multiple injuries, the Gujarat Police have initiated a comprehensive crackdown on anti-social elements, particularly targeting violations of the state’s prohibition laws.

 

The Director General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat announced a decisive action plan via social media, stating:

 

“Gujarat Police has strategised a ‘whole of Government’ approach to take strict action against anti-social elements. A statewide list is being prepared in the next 100 hours. Ruthless action will follow. Top 20 bootleggers are already identified. Safety and security are our priority—wait and watch!”

 

 

Background of the Incident

 

On March 14, in Vadodara’s Karelibaug area, Rakshit Chaurasia, a fourth-year law student at M S University, allegedly drove his car into three vehicles, leading to the death of Hemali Patel and injuring eight others. Eyewitnesses reported that Chaurasia appeared intoxicated, shouting incoherently after the crash. He was apprehended by bystanders and later arrested by the police.

In reaction to the incident, Vadodara city police conducted a four-hour special drive on Holi, booking 31 cases of drunk driving. This operation underscores the authorities’ commitment to enforcing prohibition laws and ensuring public safety.

 

Aligning with the DGP’s directive, Gujarat Police have identified the top 20 bootleggers across the state. The preparation of a comprehensive list of anti-social elements is underway, with a 100-hour deadline set for its completion. This initiative reflects a ‘whole of Government’ approach, emphasizing inter-departmental collaboration to address the issue effectively.

 

The incident has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of Gujarat’s prohibition laws. Videos of the aftermath, showing the accused’s behavior, have circulated widely, prompting debates on alcohol accessibility in the state.
