NEW DELHI: Ahead of the upcoming general election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress jointly held a press conference to announce their seat-sharing agreement. Both parties will contest together in Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, and Haryana. There will be no alliance between them in Punjab.

Speaking at the occasion, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik said that after extensive discussions, they have reached an agreement for Delhi, where Congress will contest three seats, and AAP will contest four.

“We had extensive discussions with AAP, and finally, we reached a conclusion on seat-sharing. I am pleased that the two teams of the INDIA alliance will fight together against the BJP. There are seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. We have decided that AAP will contest four seats: New Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, and East Delhi. Congress will contest three seats: Chandni Chowk, North East, and North West,” Wasnik said.

Prior to this, Congress had announced an alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP). Wasnik further stated that in Gujarat, Congress will contest 24 seats, while AAP will contest in two seats: Bhavnagar and Bharuch.

In Chandigarh, only Congress will contest the election. Wasnik mentioned that after extensive discussion, it was decided that AAP will not field any candidate in Chandigarh.

AAP MP Sandeep Pathak said that the BJP was dismantling organisations and was busy stealing votes. “For us, the country comes first, then the party. We only want to stop the BJP. We hope to win all the seats of the INDIA alliance,” Pathak said.

AAP is a member of the INDIA Alliance. Recently, AAP and Congress collaborated in the Chandigarh Mayor election and emerged victorious. AAP has asserted that the INDIA alliance will secure the maximum seats in the general election if no further members depart from the alliance.

On several occasions, AAP has accused the BJP of misusing agencies like the ED, CBI, and the Income Tax Department for political gain. Congress has not won any seats in the last two consecutive assembly or general elections. This could be one of the reasons Congress is now aligning with AAP.

However, this time, they have come together with AAP. The victory in Chandigarh has further strengthened their alliance.

The names of the candidates have not been declared as of now.
